The Johannesburg Challenge: Co-facilitated the German Follow-Up Conference to The UN Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg 2002), hosted by the German Sustainable Development Council, and the German Federal Ministries for Environment; Economic Cooperation and Development, and Foreign Affairs. Designed and co-coordinated the Implementation Conference: Stakeholder Action for Our Common Future, held in Johannesburg in August 2002, a multi-stakeholder process and conference that resulted in 25 concrete, collaborative multi-stakeholder initiatives in the areas of freshwater, energy, food security, and health. Preparations involved extensive networking, facilitation and brokering among stakeholders, governments, and intergovernmental bodies. Co-managed an international team of 20+ staff and interns; worked closely with professional facilitators, knowledge management experts, and external researchers.

Developed a methodological framework for multi-stakeholder processes, from stakeholder dialogues to sustainable development partnerships. This includes principles and practical guidelines, based on analyses of values and ideology, relevant social scientific research, global governance context, process examples, and international consultations and workshops. Published “Multi-Stakeholder Processes for Governance and Sustainability. Beyond Deadlock and Conflict” (Earthscan, 2002).

Designed and facilitated multi-stakeholder dialogues at the international and national level, eg workshops on access & benefit sharing; the international conference on freshwater (Bonn, 2001); Local Agenda 21; and with individual organisations and companies.

Coordinated and participated in the development of research reports and advocacy tools, for example, on gender and sustainable development issues such as sustainable consumption, tourism, land rights (eg co-authored the Women’s Action Agenda For a Healthy and Peaceful Planet 2015, 2002); coordinated the international conference “Gender Perspectives For Earth Summit 2002” (2001).

Coordinated and facilitated capacity building workshops for NGOs and women's networks in developing and developed countries, on sustainable development, gender issues, international policy-making processes, advocacy, networking and mentoring.

Coordinated the development of Internet and print information tools on gender issues and social development (eg The Stakeholder Toolkit for Women, Copenhagen+5).
