Indeed, it is these very concepts of partnership and commitment that lie at the heart of both UNCED and the '92 Global Forum – partnerships between governments and people, partnerships between and among various sectors of society, various nationalities, various cultures and various economic groupings. If we are to have any hope of achieving sustainable development, we must commit ourseves to forging these new partnerships. But we must also recognize that any "global partnership for sustainable development" needs to be based on concepts of equity and full participation. All of us here in Rio for UNCED and the '92 Global Forum will be contributing to a unique moment of history – a moment that will leave a legacy for future generations. Our hope is that the legacy will be one of joint responsibility and joint commitment to create a world which is more just, more equitable and more secure for us all.
